Frequently Asked Questions on TRT

Frequently Asked Questions

Testosterone is the hormone made by the body that is responsible for the normal growth and development of the male sex organs and for the maintenance of other sexual characteristics. In men, it’s produced in the testes, regulated by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Testosterone affects:
  • Growth and maturation of the prostate and other male sex organs
  • Development of male hair distribution, such as facial hair
  • Changes in body muscle mass and strength, and fat distribution
  • Sex drive and sexual function
  • Mood and energy level
  • Bone strength
The most accurate way to diagnose low testosterone (low-T) is through blood testing. Both your total testosterone AND your free testosterone play a vital role in your body’s ability to perform optimally. We have developed our own Elite Hormone Panel for this very reason. At Men’s Health Co., we’ve developed our Elite Hormone Panel to go beyond a simple number. It reveals:
  • What your testosterone level is
  • Why your testosterone is  low
  • How to correct the underlying issue
You can find out more here.
Symptoms of low-T include low energy levels, increased body fat, difficulty putting on muscle mass, increased fatigue and soreness after workouts, “brain fog”, lack of motivation, irritability, erectile dysfunction, and low sex drive.
Lifestyle changes such as weight loss, increased physical activity (especially resistance and high-intensity interval training), a balanced diet rich in nutrients, adequate sleep, and stress management can help naturally boost testosterone levels.
The benefits of TRT vary based on pre-therapy symptoms, but they can include the following:
  • Increased energy and higher motivation
  • Decreased irritability and depression
  • Improved muscle mass and strength
  • Improved sexual desire
  • Improved visuospatial cognitive function and verbal memory
  • Decreased body fat (optimal results received through the accompaniment of a diligent diet and exercise regimen)
  • Possible improvement in erectile function
  • Thicker skin
Some patients experience one or more of the following side effects from TRT:
  • Erythrocytosis, or increased red blood cells.
  • Decrease in sperm production: Testosterone therapy downregulates the production of a man’s sperm. Be upfront with your medical provider about your desire for children.
  • Prostate effects: If you have an enlarged prostate, testosterone may worsen symptoms. We routinely check lab values to keep a close eye on this issue.
  • Fluid Retention. This is usually transient in nature.
Hair Loss: If you are predisposed to male pattern baldness, starting TRT can increase the rate at which hair is lost. Ask us about this in our initial consultation!
We offer at-home injections and cream.
NO. It is not safe to be on TRT without close follow-up. Our patients have regular bloodwork and close follow-up with a provider who specializes in hormone optimization.
We teach our patients to self-inject their testosterone. Our patients appreciate the ability to tailor their injection time around their life instead of the other way around.
Our first check will be at 8 weeks after you start treatment. Once your dose is optimized and stable, we increase that time up to six months between lab draws.
It’s important to talk about the risks and benefits with a provider. Our initial consultation is 1 hour for this reason. Our main priority is informing our patients and making the best decision with you.
TRT may indirectly help with weight loss by improving muscle mass and reducing fat mass in men with low testosterone levels. However, TRT should not be seen as a standalone weight loss treatment and should be combined with lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.
The timeline for seeing the effects of TRT can vary. Some men may notice improvements in symptoms like energy levels, mood, and libido within a few weeks, while changes in body composition and muscle strength may take longer, typically several months.
TRT may improve mood and cognitive function in men with low testosterone levels, potentially reducing symptoms of depression, improving focus, and enhancing overall well-being.
TRT can negatively impact fertility by reducing sperm production. Men considering future fertility should discuss alternative treatments or sperm preservation methods with their healthcare provider before starting TRT.
